Instated Emotion

A short-lived project from 2012; an experiment into producing ‘art’ using just an iPhone. The title ‘Instated Emotion’ is the auto-corrected result of the original, equally pretentious title.

Method: browse Instagram’s popular tab (which I disliked), select photos with clear and distinct subjects, and screen-capture them. Remove the subject with an app called TouchRetouch, allowing the void to be filled with the app’s interpolation of the background. Using Photoforge2, create a mask of the original subject and delete the background. The result is a silhouette of the original subject, constructed from the imperfect and garbled interpolation of the background.

So many years later, I feel like these still hold up in a curious way. I’m occasionally tempted to do this kind of thing again. Each image took around one or two hours, depending on the intricacy of the silhouette.
